Researching family history is a favourite hobby for many people. And the Nationaal Archief contains many archives in which you may be able to find information about your ancestors. This is the place to come if one of your forefathers served with the Dutch East India Company or the Dutch armed forces, or if members of your family ever lived in the province of Zuid-Holland.
You can consult original archive documents in our Reading Room. But we are also providing more and more information online, so you can now conduct or prepare your research at home.
The Searching the collections section contains a list of the archives housed at the Nationaal Archief. Some of these, mainly those containing personal details, are available in the form of electronic databases. This means that you can quickly and easily find out online whether a particular archive contains information about your family. There is also a link to GenLias, the Dutch national genealogical database.
We provide support for your research in the form of information leaflets, an online research guide (at present only available in Dutch) and a helpdesk.
