The history of the Nationaal Archief starts in 1802. It is is the leading centre for the study of Dutch history and culture at the national level.
As the "national memory", the Nationaal Archief manages not only historic government records but also the archives of private individuals who play or have played an important part in the life of the nation. It is our task to gather these archives, to maintain them in good, ordered and accessible condition, and to present them to a broad public. To perform these duties, we employ more than 180 people.
You will find more about the Nationaal Archief, our mission and our aims in the Objectives section.
Under Organisation you will find an organisational diagram. Clicking on one of the boxes in this diagram will take you to detailed information about the work of that part of the Nationaal Archief.
We also maintain many international contacts. More information about these can be found in the International Cooperation section.
To ensure that all the archives we hold are preserved and accessible to the public, the Nationaal Archief currently employs more than 180 people. We have a wide range of permanent and temporary positions, as well as offering work placements. For a list of current openings and placements, see the Vacancies section.
More information about our collection can be found in the Collection section.
