Heritage digitisation – general
The Nationaal Archief holds a huge amount of material. Not just documents, but also many photographs, maps and drawings. Step by step, these items are being digitised – that is, put into a form which can be stored in and processed by computers – in one way or another.
There are three different types of digitised cultural heritage.
- Digital heritage.
Material which is in digital form from the outset. For example, electronic archives and photographs taken using a digital camera.
- Digitised heritage.
Material which is not originally in digital form but is copied into it. For example, scanned photographs and documents.
- Digital information about heritage.
This can be in the form of an illustration, a text or a combination of the two. It may be supplied from a database. Another example is an archive inventory containing illustrations – usually reduced in size – of particular items or details from them.
The first two types form actual digital archives. Digital information about heritage is primarily intended to make the collection more accessible. But it is also an important tool in managing the archives and other collections.
A lot of experience still needs to be built up in the field of digitisation, through both research and practice. The following projects are contributing to this, but your input on the subject in our forum could also be important.
